Building a representative democracy
We need your help to put mandatory tax disclosure reform before the voters! This Statutory initiative would require most candidates for office that are listed on statewide ballots — Presidential candidates, candidates for Governor, and candidates for the legislature at the federal and local level — to disclose their five most recent years of tax returns to the public to be named on Colorado ballots. Petitions are now available and we need your help getting it on the ballot!
Read the text of the proposal and the ballot title, approved by Colorado's Title Board. To get the proposal on the ballot, we need 98,492 valid signatures from Colorado voters on or before 3:00 pm October 13, 2017.
Strengthening Democracy Colorado is a 501 (c)4 non-profit dedicated to improving the representativeness and integrity of Colorado's government and its responsiveness to its citizens. We are particularly focused on taking talk from a blackboard, protest sign, or Facebook post, and turning it into law through direct action. We research and identify the policies that will accomplish our goals, educate the public on them, and then work to see them enacted into law. We are focused on issues like government transparency, voter suppression, gerrymandering, and public corruption, but all issues made problematic by elected politicians who ignore the public's will are on our radar. They shouldn't exist in a functioning, representative democracy.
Clearly, our near-term focus is getting mandatory tax return disclosure on Colorado's 2018 ballot. But, other massive issues like gerrymandering, voter suppression, and other structural issues undermining the integrity of our democracy remain in our focus. They're up next! We'll continue pushing education and reform advocacy in those areas. If our politicians fail to address them, we'll explore pushing remedies through the initiative for them as well. But, we can't do it without your support!
